Drawing at Home

Because of the busy season of the Holidays I do not teach during November and December, but don’t stop drawing.

If you could use this time to practice the shading of common shapes – square, circle, cone, cylinder, these shoud be in any drawing book.  After you do the shading of the shapes find an item that you could draw that is like the shape.

A box of kleenex, a cup of tea, a book on a table, etc.  Just keep drawing.

Drawing
Do a value scale this week with the different types of pencils, using some H’s and B’s.  Notice how much easier it is to get the darks.  You can do it with just more pressure but having a soft lead makes it so much easier.

Pages 14 and 15 and don’t forget to hold your pencil in the conductor way for some of the doodles.  You will find your self going back and forth, but it is important for you to get comfortable holding the pencil this way to give you more range of motion.

OK girls I am starting a self help drawing course – if you want to join just go to Hobby Lobby with your 40% off coupon and pick up the book – Pencil Drawing Technique.  Every week we will have a few pages to work on and if anyone needs to ask any questions just call me or see me at the meeting.

Drawing – I will do a small drawing section to review what we are doing and motivate you to do it.
Book:  Pencil Drawing Techniques by David Lewis
Do pages 10-13. In your sketch pad put the date at the top right hand corner and do the exercises to loosen up and then do a value scale using only the 2B pencil.
That’s not bad – remember to hold your pencil sometimes like a pencil for details, but most of the time like a band director with the pinkie and other two fingers under the pencil almost like the pencil lays on top of them and the thumb and pointer does the work.

Use a 4×6 small journal and a mechanical pencil to jot or doodle a couple of items.  This is for fast practice, it is great for Doctor’s office waits, you would not believe how a box of Kleenex looks when you draw it.
