Dear Sharon,

Hofcraft is excited to announce a new monthly email newsletter for Decorative and Tole Painters. As president of Middle Tennessee Decorative Artists, we thought you might be interested in passing this information on to your chapter members.

As one of the first Decorative Painting Distributors (est.1973); Hofcraft has developed many strong contacts in the art supply industry. Through these contacts we receive notice of exciting new products and additions to product lines of interest to Decorative Painters. We have decided to share some of this information with you in a monthly newsletter.

This email version of our newsletter is part of our continual effort to become a more environmentally responsible organization. We have greatly reduced our carbon footprint this past year through becoming more energy efficient and reducing paper consumption. Over the last year we have reduced our warehouse power consumption nearly by half while adding employees and still maintaining our steady rate of growth.

E-newletters are not only better for the environment but are a more efficient form of communication that allows us to respond more quickly to our customer’s needs. We hope you find this to be the case and appreciate your feedback.

You can sign up for the newsletter by clicking on the link below. Feel free to share this link with chapter members and painting friends. If you are currently not a Hofcraft customer we would still like to extend this information to you. We are glad to share what we learn among fellow artists. If at any time you want to unsubscribe, a link is included in every newsletter you receive.

Thank you. We hope you find our new e-newsletter informative and helpful’

Happy Painting,

Looking For… instructions for Mary Owens Prep

Jean, I am forwarding the prep instructions from Mary Owens. She said that any wood surface no smaller than 8×10 or larger tha 11×14 would work. She likes using the red label Fredrix stretched canvas 11×14. There is no prep for that. She did the sunflowers on a lace edge tray and can sell those to anyone wanting one. Also no prep. I know it is early but this will give people some options. Fran

PREPPING INSTRUCTIONS FOR SURFACE CHOICES

Please pass this information on to any students preparing to come to our seminar.  The time frame for whitewashing wood and sealing is critical when it comes to working with the technical pen.  I will be providing this spray for the students to use in class so they will not be required to bring any product with them.

Refer to the sheets with photos attached for the sizes of the pieces being done in class.  Remember that using the projectors in class will allow the students to bring in different sizes as well as surface choices.  Students do not have to adhere to my size suggestions, they can vary the size because the projector will enlarge or reduce as needed.  This makes the entire seminar a fun and really unique experience!

IF WORKING ON CANVAS

Please advise that they use Fredrix Medium grade [red label] for the best results.  There is NO PREP before class.  Just bring to class as is! Please….No Canvas Panels at all. If you cannot find the Fredrix red label stretched canvas, you can buy a pad of Fredrix canvas and just use it taped to a piece of cardboard!  Look for the canary yellow pad with bright red lettering on the front.  Make sure it is actual canvas and not canvas PAPER.

IF WORKING ON WOOD

Please follow these instructions for prepping:

  • Sand wood if needed, wipe off dust.
  • Use a rag dampened with water and a squirt of any regular bottled white acrylic paint.  NO White Lightning or Pickling Medium. Use the rag to stain the wood surface with the white paint.  Do not completely basecoat unless the grain is really offensive.  Let dry; evaluate, then repeat if needed.  Set wood aside to dry completely.
  • Seal with at least 3 GENEROUS coats of Matte Spray.  Let the spray dry between coats.  If students can not locate Liberty Matte Spray; they can use Americana, or any other brand of sealer.  You will notice the grain of the wood is raised.  Use brown grocery bag or a piece of tracing paper folded into 4ths to buff and smooth the surface; then, dust it off and apply a light misting of the matte spray to give the surface tooth.  This will allow the inking to work over the surface without slipping around over a slick surface.

This process must be done at least 24 hours in advance.

  • Do not wait til the last minute.  If you can allow 48 hours it would be even better!
  • If the wood has a busy grain and base-coating is desired, use a sponge roller and coat evenly, let dry and seal with the spray I mentioned above.

            IF WORKING ON SLATE

Basecoat with a sponge roller and at least 2 coats of white or off white acrylic paint.  Do NOT wet the roller with water at all; it will leave bubbles on the surface of the slate. Let dry, then seal with 2 light mists of matte spray.  24 hours before class is a must for curing time to be achieved.

IF WORKING ON TIN

Basecoat following the directions for slate.  Sponge rolling achieves an eggshell finish that accepts the inking and rouging wonderfully.  Spray and seal 24 hours before class

Project sizes for my seminars should be no smaller than 8 x 10 and no larger than 11 x 14.

Looking For… Paint holder

Ladies,
I would like to sell this paint bottle (2 oz.) holder (pictures attached). It holds 300 bottles. It turns and rolls. My husband made me one to hang on the wall because I needed the space and I no longer need it. I will take $50.00 for it, to the first lady who emails me that she wants it. I will deliver it to the next painting meeting or to the April seminar. Better hurry and respond if you want it. It may go fast.
My love,
Elva

Mini Group – South

Well Good News Fellow Decorative Artist,
I’ve been working out here in Spring Hill on developing and re-organizing the Spring Hill Arts Center which is located at the Old Spring Hill High School on 1220 School Street off of Duplex Rd. Exciting things are beginning to develop such as the new Spring Hill Arts Learning Center! (see attachment)
We were given a nice 30×30 classroom that will be used as the new Learning Center. What I would like to propose to y’all is a new meeting place for Decorative Artist to expand and create a new Mini-Group as part of the MDTA.  This would give us great exposure to the Spring Hill, Franklin and Columbia areas. Also including Marshal County and Maury County!!  There has been a tremendous amount of interest in this community for Decorative Art and a great opportunity for us to get together and paint!
Won’t you please join me to discuss forming a new meeting Saturday Feburary 27th at 10:00am here at the Old School.  Come stop by and see the new classroom!  Bring a friend and if you’d like to hang out and work on something, bring that too!!
The new Spring Hill Arts Learning Center will be offering a wide variety of art classes to the community from SHAC artist who are offering their services in teaching their crafts.  They have asked me to be their new Director for the Learning Center and to get this project started. Anyone interested in becoming a teacher for the new Learning Center may contact me so spread the word!!!!!  This is an exciting adventure and my wish is for you to become a part of this journey with me. So please let me know if you are interested by contacting me at (931) 490-6807 or email at barkspirit@bellsouth.net

Best Regards,
Shirley Barker
